Summertime Fun on a budget

Long behold summer has officially started and I must say I’m excited and not excited. Summer for my kids is great because well no more school for a few months, sleeping in, spending time with friends, and vacationing who doesn’t love summer. The thing about summer for parents can be great and not so great especially when your low on cash. Being a single mom raising kids can be tough and planning fun things in the summer can at times be challenging. Let’s face it friends are not always around, so that means your child is in the house half the time bored, playing video games, or eating up all the food you have in the pantry. If you are a single parent or even a two parent household most parents still have to work during the summer to make ends meat, thus leaving kids at home with or the older ones without a babysitter. At times during past summer breaks I felt guilty because I couldn’t take my kids on vacations or out to fairs or carnivals because I just didn’t have the money. Between making sure I could pay rent, bills, and extra for food because they weren’t in school, I just couldn’t do all the fun things they wanted to do.

I stated researching and brainstorming some ideas that parents could do to have fun  with their kids, either for free or with discounts so that they could have fun quality time with them.

  1. I have found the many movie theatres throughout the country in the summer have discount day. The theatre chain Cinemark in Chicago has $1.00 movie days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The movies are mostly G and PG rated and are the old movies, but ones the kids love to see over and over again. I think it’s a great way to get the kids out of the house and more exciting to go to the theatre to see rather than at home.

2. There are many restaurants that provide kids eat free or free items for kids with a purchase of a adult meal. With summer comes really hot days and that means mamma does not want to cook, who wants to turn their oven on even the stove top in 90 degree weather.  Chili’s Bar and Grill has kids eat free Tuesdays with the purchase of a adult entrée, and Steak n Shake on Sundays with every $9.00 spent don’t forget half price drinks and shakes during the weekdays between 2-5, who doesn’t want a nice cold shake in the summertime.

3. I love Groupon I tend to go on their site weekly and check what new deals they have between getting a discount on eating out, doing things around town, or special prices on trips away for a mini vacation. Last summer I bought a Groupon to this kids arcade place named Enchanted Castle the Groupon cost $30.00 and it included 2 premium activities for 2 kids, $12.00 in game play for each child, one large one topping pizza, and pitcher of pop. The total of all this would of probably been well over $70.00 or $80.00 so to me it was a good deal. The kids loved the food and got to play laser tag, bumper cars, indoor go karts, and arcades while I just sat and watched, SCOREEEE.

These are just a few ideas I had for summer fun on a budget. I have many more that I will be posting in days to come, but if you have kids at home bored try to take some time and do your own research. Look into movie theatres, bowling alleys, family restaurants, and discounts sites like Groupon and Livingsocial and see what fun things you can come up with. I would love to hear your ideas and suggestions as to keeping kids entertained, after all we as parents are in this parenting thing together so as they say “sharing is caring.”

My Kids wanna make money!

When my son came to me one day last week and asked “mom how can I make more money besides doing chores,” I said “so are you trying to say that I don’t pay you enough for chores a week?” Granted he has about 4 simple chores a night consisting of homework being completed, shower and brush teeth, cleaning his room, and washing his dishes at 15.00 a week I think is sufficient. I cannot and will not ever discourage my children of making more money ever if they want to work for it, so we sat and thought of other ways.

One way I thought would be fun for them was something that I do in my spare time which is doing surveys. I mean why not they’re on the computer 24/7 all the time anyway so why not make money while being on there. I have two websites that I love to use that are actually fun to do and legit they pay pretty decent money for their surveys:

Characteristics of a Pieces

I was reading in bed last night and decided to check my Facebook page one more time before going to bed. On my timeline there was a post about 12 things you need to know about Pieces, and yes I’m a very proud pieces no matter how sensitive they say we are. One fact about us stood out only because it was so true, it read that we are daydreamers and night thinkers “Often their best ideas come to them at night.”This particular phrase is so true for me, and in fact I do think a lot before or when I’m asleep. I had to even ask my hubby if he has heard me talk in my sleep and he said no.

when I wake up in the morning I start writing or planning right away after I have made my morning coffee of course, because momma needs that. Just like now it’s Sunday morning at 6:58am. Not many people are up this early on Sunday but myself and writing their brains out right now that’s okay though. The sooner I get my thoughts on paper the better my writing makes sense.

I don’t really look into astrology very much maybe every blue moon, but it amazes me how right some of the pinpoints of our signs reflect on who we are and how we function in life.I do find myself thinking all the time more so than others, on how to make more money of course we all do but I try to come up with creative ways, nothing kinky though. I try to come up with different versions of one recipe instead of staying with the same. I also change my house around constantly wondering if I do this, or put that someway will it make my whole routine better for me and my kids. None the less I find myself always wondering, and thinking, and daydreaming and that’s ok because that’s why I’m momma on a mission.

New Beginnings

I want to take the time to introduce myself my name is Kimberly Johnson and this is my very first entry on my very first blog ever. I’m a stay at home mom and grandmother and wanted to take time out of my day to write about my experiences as a mother to give people around the world a different or maybe even similar perspective on parenting and family life. I currently reside in Chicago, IL. and if any of you know of or live in Chicago it is one of the most expensive city’s to live in. I find myself living in this city for years that I have had to become very creative with how to survive as a single mom with four children now (25,20,13 & 12).Processed with Moldiv My interests as a stay at home mom has made me become more frugal by learning and enjoying how to coupon, budgeting my money better, and organizing my time better. Im hoping in the days to come and with more and more posts I can share with you my struggles living in such a big and at time dangerous but overall exciting city. I can’t wait to write about recipes I have come to love, budgeting ideas that have gotten me by, and  organizational tips on how to get yourself back on track with all the everyday endeavours that we try to encounter.Thank you for taking the time to read my post and hoping for many more to come.
